The Complete Guide to Trekking to Tiger's Nest

Everything you need to know about visiting Bhutan's most sacred monastery

Tiger's Nest Monastery perched on cliff

Introduction to Tiger's Nest

Paro Taktsang, more commonly known as Tiger's Nest, is Bhutan's most iconic landmark. Perched dramatically on a cliffside 900 meters above the Paro Valley, this sacred Buddhist monastery is both a spiritual pilgrimage site and one of the world's most breathtaking trekking destinations.

The Legend

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to this location on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. He meditated in a cave here for three months, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. The monastery was built around this cave in 1692.
