Introduction to Tiger's Nest

Paro Taktsang, more commonly known as Tiger's Nest, is Bhutan's most iconic landmark. Perched dramatically on a cliffside 900 meters above the Paro Valley, this sacred Buddhist monastery is both a spiritual pilgrimage site and one of the world's most breathtaking trekking destinations.

The Legend

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to this location on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. He meditated in a cave here for three months, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. The monastery was built around this cave in 1692.

Trekking Details

The Route

The trek begins at the base parking lot (2,600m). The first section is a steep climb through pine forests with occasional clearings offering spectacular views. About halfway up is a cafeteria where most hikers stop for tea and a rest.

• Sturdy hiking shoes
• Layered clothing (temperatures vary)
• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
• Water (at least 2 liters)
• Snacks/energy food
• Camera (you'll want to capture the views!)

Best Time to Visit

The ideal months are March-May and September-November when temperatures are mild and skies are clear. Winters can be very cold with possible snow, while summers bring monsoon rains that make the trail slippery.

Inside the Monastery

Visitors must leave bags, phones and cameras at the entrance. The monastery consists of several temples built into the cliff face, connected by staircases and bridges. The highlight is the sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated.
